“What is the latest from Sweden?” I hear you cry! Well, dear reader, here are the headlines:
KIDS LOVE THEIR NEW HOME
So last Tuesday we went to see our new home with my 2 bonusbarn*. It’s about an hour’s drive from my in-laws’ home along many a twisty-turny road. Stunning lake-views are a constant feature of the drive. We toured the whole property: basement shop, ground floor restaurant and bar, 1st floor flat, loft, guest annexe and barn. My step-son particularly liked the pond in the garden and the general size of the property. My step-daughter liked the house, apart from the spooky mannequin that inexplicably graces the hallway. I think that will be the first thing to go when we move in in 2 weeks’ time!
FRIENDLY BANK MANAGER PLEDGES BUSINESS SUPPORT
Last Friday we went to the bank to talk about mortgages, pensions and other general grown-up things. Visiting the bank in Sweden is very different to visiting the bank in London. Our Swedish bank manager is about my age and instead of a suit, was dressed in jeans and jumper. He is super enthusiastic about our hotel project and he also happens to live next door to the hotel!!! He gave really helpful and specific advice about website development, buying a card terminal, getting me a pension, getting the best mortgage rate and so on. His Canadian girlfriend visits regularly and is already looking forward to meeting me and wants to help out at the hotel over the summer. It seems we are already making friends in our new neighbourhood!
CURRENT HOTEL OWNER HANDS OVER PAPERWORK
Also on Friday we met with the current owner to hand over bills and other paperwork. We heard about some of our future bookings, including 2 choir visits – which will fill the entire hotel on both occasions. We will also have the Swedish army staying with us for a week in the spring as they are doing a training exercise nearby. I am looking forward to meeting these and other guests!
HUSBAND GETS NEW JOB
The happiest news of the week was that hubby has got a new job! He is the new head of music at a primary school in Alvesta (45 mins drive from Urshult). This is wonderful fantastic news as it takes financial pressure off the hotel. It will make it easier to pay for the updates we want to make to our bathroom, kitchen, guestrooms, facade (not to mention our flagpole!) He starts his new job the day after we fly to Sweden – no hanging around!
REMOVAL COMPANY BOOKED AND PACKING STARTED
We have booked and paid for the moving company and they are due to arrive at 8:30am on Monday 2 March. We have packed most of our things now but there is still some way to go!
I HAVE FINISHED WORKING AT 5 OF MY 8 WEEKLY LOCATIONS
The week before half-term break I finished my teaching jobs at Petchey Academy and Clapton Girls’ Academy. This week I finished at the Mayflower Federation and also with some of my private students. Just St Andrew’s Primary School, Southwark Children’s Brass Band and my one piano student to go. We’re getting close now!!!
